Flooding

Flood Guidance - Shardlow & Great Wilne

Your home in the parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne is located within flood zone 2 (comprises land assessed as having between a 1 in 100 and 1 in 1000 annual probability of river flooding) and is protected by flood defences which are maintained by the Environment Agency against all but a 1 in a 100 year flood event.

Despite the risk of flood event being low, measures should be taken to prepare for the eventuality of a flood occurring.

All homeowners are advised to prepare for flood events even if flood defences are installed in your area. Past flood events have caught out homeowners who have failed to plan for the eventuality of a more extreme flood event.

The Parish Council emergency committee have produced a community flood plan to support the authorities with our local knowledge, to make sure that we have clear lines of communication with them; and to provide a local resource of information and material in the event of flooding.

A local flood warden has been appointed as the key link between the community and the authorities. During a flood alert, the warden can be contacted with any flood related questions on 07732 958431 or email shardlowparish@icloud.com

If flooding does occur and you or a neighbour are in difficulties, please call the flood warden. The warden is there to help and will arrange assistance if possible.

If a life threatening situation arises, the warden can ensure the emergency services reach the right place quickly.

As well as over-topping river banks and other water courses, heavy rain can also cause flash flooding of roads.

If you think your property is threatened, call the flood warden who will alert the Highway Authority and make available the sandbags and plastic sheeting; which could protect your house.

The area also has several assistant wardens who keep an eye on things in their own part of the village and act as eyes for the flood warden. If you would like to help in this way, please get in touch with a member of the Parish Council for more details.

Shardlow and Great Wilne Parish Council have a local resilience store with a limited supply of sand bags and associated materials which can be quickly made available to householders in the parish - if you need to make use of these supplies, please call the flood warden who will arrange to meet you at the store.

You can prepare a personal flood plan. Consider what you would need to do if your home was likely to be flooded and write it down. Thinking about this now could save valuable time if an emergency did occur.

Some considerations:

  • Moving valuable items, pets, cars
  • Locating your gas/electricity supplies
  • Planning an escape route
  • Putting together an emergency kit which could include a supply of food and water, first aid kit, phone and charger, contacts list, torch, radio, medication, insurance documents and money

For information on:

  • Live flood alerts and warnings
  • Current river levels
  • A three day flood forecast
  • Flood mapping
