Eastgate Car Park 1 Hour FREE PARKING
PRESS RELEASE – Eastgate Car Park
7,000 USERS A MONTH MAKING USE OF 1 HR FREE PARKING
The installation of new car parking machines in Eastgate Car Park in April 2019 has not only allowed users to pay parking charges using a credit or debit card it also provides a range of information to the Town Council.
Data for the six months April to September shows that some 7, 000 users a month are benefitting from the free one hour's parking offered by the Town Council on Mondays to Saturdays (the car park is free on Sundays). This equates to over 250 vehicles per day.
Councillors hope that the 1 hr free parking is helping parents with the dropping off and picking up of their children attending nearby schools and those needing to pop into town to do some shopping or visit the doctor or dentist.
Over 42,000 free one hour tickets have been issued in the 6 months to September; with a quarter of the 28,000 tickets issued for the short stay (£1.50) and long stay (£3.50) charging periods paid for by debit/credit card.
Councillors are pleased to see the take up of card payment is proving successful and hopefully helping many of the car park users by avoiding the need for them to carry change.
Plans are now being finalised for a major refurbishment of Eastgate Car Park in 2020 costing up to £300k.
Work is expected to take up to 6 weeks and as well as a complete resurface, drainage repairs and relining, parking space sizes will be increased and the layout of the car park changed to create a better flow of vehicles.
These changes will mean a reduction of approximately 25 spaces in the car park but the Town Council hope it will improve the overall parking experience.
Councillors will be reviewing the data provided by the new machines and considering any further changes, including parking charges, in the New Year. Potential charging points for electric vehicles are also being looked at as part of our response to the Climate Emergency.
