Who we are & what we do

The Parish Council

Essendine Parish Council nominally consists of a maximum of six councillors, who are elected every four years, and employs a Parish Clerk who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the council.

The Parish Council consists of a Chairman and five Councillors who meet in Essendine Village Hall. The date and the agenda for each meeting is posted on the notice board by the bus stop in the centre of the village and on the meetings calendar on this web site

As an elected body the Parish Council is responsible to you, the people we represent. Attending a council meeting is the best way to find out what we do. Look in the Meetings Calendar to find dates for our public meetings.

Where do we get our money from?

Parish Council Precept - The 'precept' is a sum of money collected through the council tax, which is used by the Parish Council to maintain and improve facilities and services for the village.

The Parish has several routine and regular items that it must pay for, in addition there are extraordinary items that we need to finance from time to time.

The funding source for this is termed the Parish Precept and is a small portion of the Council Tax levied by Rutland County Council and then passed to the Parish Council each tax year.

Details of this are part of the regular minutes published and are open for discussion at Parish Council meetings.

The only other funding source comes by way of specific donations or grants which are usually targeted at individual projects.

Decisions made

Planning applications are considered by the Parish Council but they can only make recommendations concerning applications and the final decision is taken by the County Council.

Other local services are provided by Rutland County Council and details can be found on their website or by searching the list of local services on this website. Although the Parish Council has no powers in relation to services provided by the County Council it acts as a useful conduit for concerns voiced by local residents, for example over issues of road safety, public transport and preserving the rural environment.
