6 Alder Trees 15-20m high and 1 ash approx. 15m high.
FELL.. Due to safety of people using the Canal Towpath and Lane to Holloway. All are self setters that have become overgrown and totally covered in ivy, shading out the very species which are supposed to be protected as listed in the Derbyshire Biological Register. No amenity value, too tall and unwieldy for a narrow strip of land between the canal and the lane to Holloway.

We acquired the land 26 years ago and were informed that the site would be maintained by Amber Valley via Derbyshire Wildlife. There has been little maintenance and now I am concerned as landowner who is taking responsibility in the event of a falling tree either on the lane or canal.

On 17th November I contacted the Ranger at Middleton Top and had a site meeting, then on 20th December had a reply to my concerns regarding the safety of the trees as follows:

Further to our recent meeting about the trees on your land that you are concerned about.
After the meeting, I contacted our tree inspector and he has had a look to determine their safety. His assessment was:

"Regarding the trees opposite the car park on the other side of the canal. As the target of value is the tow path and not the canal, I can't see a significant risk due to the generally good appearance of the trees and the low chance of reaching the target."

Given this assessment the Authority would not see any reason to become involved in the management of the trees.

Should you need to employ a contractor in future to manage the trees then we would be open to discussion about the process in order to maintain safety of people using the canal towpath & parking area.
